This History Of Peugeot was downloaded from several sites on the net, from asking the list members, and from any and all who would answer, then transcribed in message format so everyone could read it. This document reviews the parallel histories of each of the marques until 1976, when they were combined to create PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN. Our story, therefore, is in three parts: the Peugeot marquee, the Citroën marquee and the PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN Group.
Some points I found interesting; First Peugeot engine-1897, in 1929 the 201 is launched, the first model with a "0" for the second digit, which is a practice still used today. They introduced independent front suspension in 1931, a system that was adopted by all car makers. The first electric sunroof, in 1935 (they still haven't got that right). 1941, an electric car. 1955 - Pininfarina shows up with the 403. In 1959 the first production diesel, in a 403. In 1960 the 404 is introduced. Read the story, it tells all that and more. Just thought you'd be interested. :-)
The data I have came from several sources on the net. The first Peugeot I stuck my head under the hood on was 1982 when I went to work for EAD. They sent me to Peugeot school, now a certified maniac in the shop. There I saw 60's, 70's model 403, 404, 504 and the brand new 505.
The earliest diesel/date I can find is the 403 in 1959 with XLD 40hp or XL4D 45hp. They used both these engines in the 204 73-74. The 404 came out in 60 and in 65, a one seater 404 diesel set 40 class records. In 68 the 504 came out, best I can figure by early to mid 70's the XD88 55hp and a couple years later the XD90 59hp. In 78 they came out with the XD2 70hp for their 79 cars. The XD2C 70hp different preheat plugs came out in 80-81. The XD2S 76hp turbo came out in 82. The XD3T 95hp came out in 83 and was still there when they left the USA in 91. The last 504 sedan was 79 and wagon was 84, imported to the USA. The last car was 91.
The only XD88 I saw, I changed preheat plugs in, was mounted in an inboard sailing yacht, in 84. The name "Indénor" come up in my research as a factory, producing diesel engines for commercial use, it was a Peugeot designed, Indénor engine that went into the 403. Citroën was tied into Indénor somehow. Citroën and Peugeot merged in 76, to form PSA Peugeot Citroën.
Peugeot History
PSA Peugeot Citroën: One group, Two marques, Explore Their History.
The history of Peugeot is not simply the story of a range of motor cars. However, it was the motor car that made Peugeot famous and enabled it to carve out an international reputation for itself in all these areas. This extraordinary industrial growth was due to Armand Peugeot, who was the first to have faith in the motor car, introducing a steam-driven three-wheel vehicle at the 1889 World Fair. He later quickly saw the possibilities offered by the oil engine and, once they were convinced of its success, the family got right behind him, in the process turning Peugeot into one of the most powerful industrial empires of Europe and, indeed, the world over the following years.
This story follows the changes and successes, trials and tribulations, innovations and choices which, coupled with its capacity to reinvent itself and change direction, are what enabled Peugeot to become an industrial group which has become increasingly powerful over the decades.
