Peugeot reinforces its position thanks to the 206 and 607 and confirms its leadership in the diesel stakes with the HDI particle-filter engine. |
1998 Agreement signed with the Rio de Janeiro authorities for the construction of an automobile factory in Porto Real, to be operational in 2001. Policy of using common platforms and tooling for the two PSA brands, Peugeot and Citroën, is adopted. In March, introduction of the "2O Coeur" concept car at the Geneva Motor Show. Its folding roof adopts an idea pioneered by Peugeot in 1934 with the 401 Eclipse. It makes it possible to have 2 extra rear seats for occasional use as well as luggage space. The announcement that this small miracle may be mass produced at an unbeatable price of around 100,000 FF. provokes great excitement. PSA takes control of the Sevel Argentine factory where the Partner, 405, 206 and the Berlingo are produced. In November, introduction of the 206 WRC to take part in the world rally championships from 1999 onwards. 1999 The 206 WRC makes its debut in the Tour of Corsica.Victory in the San Remo rally. In October, Peugeot unveils the 607, its new prestige saloon car, at the Frankfurt Motor Show. 2000 Victory for the 206 WRC in the Swedish rally (February), followed by 2nd place in rallies in Portugal (March) and Argentina (May) with the Finnish Grönholm/Rautiainen team. In March, two concept cars are unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show: the 607 Féline and the 607 Paladine. In May, the millionth 206 comes off the production line, 18 months after its launch. On 2 and 3 June, the new Peugeot museum, Musée de l'Aventure Peugeot , is inaugurated in Sochaux after extension work. It contains 200 vehicles, including 150 cars. |
