1960 In May, introduction of the 404.Two million are produced between 1960 and 1972. Stylistically, the body of the Pininfarina-designed 404, a blend of classic modernism and good taste, represents a total revamp of the Peugeot image. Production of forged tools is transferred to subsidiaries: Forges de Lavieu in the Loire district and Forges de Goldenberg in Alsace. 1961 In March, Peugeot brings out the first French direct injection engine at the Geneva Motor Show and offers it as standard on the 404 six months later. Peugeot's annual output reaches 260,000 vehicles. Work starts on a factory on the 300 hectare site at Ile Napoléon near Mulhouse. 1962 Annual automobile output exceeds 200,000 units. Launch of the BB 104 moped with its streamlined body.
1963 Negotiations with Citroën result in a limited form of association. However, no further rapprochement ensues, so negotiations are initiated with Renault (Régie Nationale des Usines Renault). First Peugeot victory in the East African Safari for Noxicki and Cliff in a 404. In August, production of the 403 reaches the million mark.
